hMailServer Review and Overview
hMailServer is a free email server which runs on Microsoft Windows. It runs as a service in Windows and includes tools for management and backup. It was developed in C++, C#, and its stable version was released in 2017.
Why hMailServer?
Apart from the fact that it’s free of cost, hMailServer is also an open-source product that allows users to make it better. It is straightforward to install and setup on any machine running on Windows, and it supports IMAP, POP3, and SMTP email protocols. Regarding the email storage, emails are stored on hard drive in raw MIME format.
Features
hMailServer has all the features of a standard mail server, which include multi-domain support, aliases, catch-all, and basic-mailing lists. Other than these common features, hMailServer also has some unique features, such as –
AntiSpam feature can be used to execute several types of AntiSpam mechanisms, which include DNS Blocking based on Host, DNS Blocking based on URL, Greylisting, a built-in feature known as SpamAssassin which does not let Spam mails enter, SPF, and DKIM.
Integration of Clam AV Anti-virus software, SquirrelMail for webmail, RoundCube for webmail (requires database like MySQL), and the SpamAssassin feature makes hMailServer a right choice for a professional environment.
Everything else
hMailServer supports some minute features as well, like – virtual domains, SSL Encryption, Routing, Multi-homing, etc.,
It also allows users to download both stable and beta releases. Though it should be noted that while a beta build is the latest release, it might have some bugs which may trouble users. To keep services running without loss of data, it is recommended that users use the only stable build of the hMailServer. Beta build is meant for developers who want to point out bugs and the workaround regarding them.
Conclusion
hMailServer is simple to install, easy to use, has AntiSpam, and other security features alongside the integration of various features. All these at zero cost makes it a recommended mail server, but only for Windows users. It is worth a try for someone who is new and novice to mail servers.
